What beer pairs well with pizza bread and a movie?
The beer: Driftwood Wheat Ale from Sister Lakes Brewing.
This wheat ale pairs well with this type of recipe because the crisp and light citrus flavor pairs well with the creamy cottage cheese center, but doesn’t take away from the ground beef and sauce layer.
BONUS – I couldn’t pass up a chance to feature a beer that comes from my own hometown.
What movie pairs well with pizza night?
For this Mitten Movie Night, we are starting Harry Potter from the very beginning. We are heading to Florida in a few weeks and visiting Universal Studios while there.
This will be Little A’s first time going when he can actually enjoy everything there. He wasn’t even 2 the last time we went, so I’m excited to get him into the movies so he will understand just how cool that part of the park is.
Ingredients
This delicious stuffed French bread has-
- French bread loaves. I picked them up from the bakery department at my local grocery store.
- Cottage cheese and egg mixture. Whole milk cottage cheese works best.
- Ground beef, onion, and spaghetti sauce cooked together. Use 80/20/ or 90/10 ground beef.
- Shredded mozzarella cheese to melt on top.

How to make this lasagna French bread recipe step-by-step
In a pan brown the ground beef until cooked through, and drain the grease.
To the same pan add onions and garlic. There should be grease still in the pan, if not add a small amount of olive oil. Lightly brown the onions and garlic, then add the ground beef back to the pan.
Now add the spaghetti sauce and cook until warmed through and all mixed together.
In a small bowl, whisk 1 egg then add the container of cottage cheese. Mix together well.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Cut the French bread loaves in half and create wells by removing some of the bread from the center of each piece.
Don’t throw that bread from the center away! You can use it to make homemade croutons later.
On a baking sheet lay down some parchment paper. Place the bread halves on top.
Spoon the cottage cheese mixture into the wells of the bread.
Spread the ground beef meat mixture on top of the cottage cheese mixture evenly over the 4 slices of bread.
Finally, sprinkle the two cups of shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on top of each piece of bread.
Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
Tips & Variations
- Removing some of the bread in the center makes a shallow area for adding the cottage cheese fillings. Makes it so much easier to eat!
- Brush some melted butter and garlic on the bread to give it a ‘garlic bread’ feel.
- Make your own homemade French bread using this recipe from House of Nash Eats.
- If you don’t eat beef, this works great with ground chicken or turkey, or make it meatless by swapping it out for mushrooms.
FAQ’s
How do you keep French bread from getting soggy?
Make sure to drain the beef from all its grease. Then use a slotted spoon to add the ground beef mixture to the bread.

Can you pair already baked french bread hull and cut out dough or most of it and layer it like you do a standard lasagna ie: french bread cut length wise hull out bread leaving all of crust then layer ,noodle, riccotta, cheese, repeat then bake off
Erin@BottomLeftoftheMitten
I wouldn’t see why you couldn’t add noodles, the more carbs the better!! I would think thought that it would make the bread heavier so you may have to eat with a fork instead of picking it up.
Michelle
Love this! Also I totally agree, Trader Joe’s is an amazing place to get good beer
