This deli chicken sandwich with dill pickles has delicious toasted bread on the outside and a layer of chicken and melted white cheddar cheese on the inside. Sprinkled with garlic powder and dill for even more flavor.
I have become a HUGE fan of making sandwiches in the air fryer. When toasted in the air fryer, sandwiches like roasted red pepper turkey, veggie, and ham and cheese come out like a combination between grilled cheese and panini. Is it possible to have two of the best sandwich combinations all in one? Yes, it is possible with the air fryer and this chicken sandwich with deli meat proves it.

What beer pairs well with a chicken deli meat sandwich?
The beer: Honey Kolsch from Rogue
This beer is slightly sweet with a light hint of honey. Thinking that sweet from the honey in the beer and sour from the dill pickles, the sweet and sour aspect would be a winning combination, and it worked perfectly.
What movie should you watch while eating crispy air fryer sandwiches with melted cheese and dill pickles?
One of my favorite shows is Resident Alien starting Season 2 at the end of the month, I thought I should probably watch a movie, other than Dodgeball, that features the main actor Alan Tudyk. So we watched Playing God. It was a really fun and heartwarming movie. Highly recommend.
Ingredients

Deli Chicken Sandwiches in the Air Fryer
How to layer a deli sandwich in the air fryer step-by-step
Spread half of the butter on a slice of bread. Place face down in the air fryer basket.
Sprinkle with shredded white cheddar cheese.
Layer the sliced dill pickle over the cheese.
Add the slices of chicken breast deli meat.
Then, add the rest of the cheese and pickles.
Spread butter onto the top piece of bread then add to the top of the sandwich.
Shake garlic powder and dill over the butter.
Set the air fryer to 350 degrees for 5 minutes.
Using a spatula, flip the sandwich over and sprinkle the other side with the garlic powder and dill.
Set the timer for 2-3 more minutes.
Remove the sandwich with the spatula and cut it in half. Serve with a side of Thousand Island dressing for dipping.
Tips & Variations
- Swap out original chicken lunch meat for buffalo chicken, rotisserie, BBQ, or lemon pepper flavor.
- Use room-temperature unsalted butter for spreading on the bread. If the butter is too cold it will rip the bread. It also melts much better when at room temperature.
- No only are air fryers for cooking fresh sandwiches, but they are also a great way to reheat sandwiches too! Add the sandwich to the air fryer and cook at 375 degrees for 3 minutes per side.
FAQ’s
How long should you toast a sandwich in the air fryer?
I like to cook the first side of the sandwich for 5 minutes, flip then just cook for another 2-3 minutes on the second side. It leaves cheese melted on the inside and the bread super crispy.
Can you make this sandwich if you don’t have an air fryer?
Of course! Use a medium to large saute pan on the stove over medium heat. Cook for 4-5 minutes on one side then check to see if the bread is toasted. Flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
Storage
This is a single-serving sandwich and is meant to be made to order. Store each element of this recipe separately. Lunchmeat in a container or Ziploc, bread in a bread bag and place on the counter or refrigerator, and pickles in the pickle jar.
