This easy guacamole dip is a quick avocado recipe that even kids will love! Serve with baked tortilla chips sprinkled with Himalayan salt and cracked pepper.

Tonight for this Mitten Movie Night, instead of a food and beer pairing I’m doing a super easy snack that kids and parents will both enjoy while watching their favorite family show or movie.

Since this recipe is mainly for the kids, I kept this appetizer simple to four basic ingredients and made it without cilantro. While traditional guacamole recipes include cilantro and other ingredients like tomatoes and onions, I added them to separate bowls so the adults can add these ingredients to their own bowls.

Then, to pay homage to tonight’s television selection, we oven-baked flour tortilla ‘dog bones’ for chips with a simple salt and pepper seasoning. These chips came out crispy and held up to all the dunking.

Kids’ TV shows that the whole family will love

Today is the season finale of one of our favorite family shows to watch, Turner & Hooch on Disney+. This show has something for everyone: laughter, romance, special family bonds, and a whodunit all centered around the big and messy main character, Hooch.

I really think that Disney did a wonderful job of updating this classic, which I remember watching as a kid, into a modern-day series.

Ingredients

For this simple avocado dip recipe-

  • Two ripe avocados. See below for how to find the perfect avocado!
  • 1-2 cloves of garlic. Adjust the amount on how much your family likes it, mine LOVES it!
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Flour tortillas
  • Spray olive oil and seasonings like cracked pepper and pink Himalayan salt

How do you make sure that the avocado is ripe enough to use for guacamole?

Place the avocado in your hand and use your pointer finger and thumb and gently press the sides. Is it hard? Then it’s not ready. Is there a slight give to the skin? Then it’s just right. Is it mushy? Then it’s too ripe.

Only using half of the avocado? Cut in half and use the half that does NOT have the pit in it. Leave the pit in the remaining half and cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Use within 3 days.

Stack 3 flour tortillas on top of each other.

Press down with the dog bone cookie cutter, then place the chips onto a 9×13 baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat until you have around 20 cut-out dog bones.

Bake for 6-8 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Not only is this great as an appetizer, but it’s also good on top of these double-decker tacos, buffalo sloppy joes, and pork and bean nachos.

Storage

Place any leftover guacamole in a container. Place a piece of plastic wrap on top and press it down so that it’s completely covering the top. This keeps it from turning brown. Cover with a top and refrigerate. Eat within 3 days.

For the chips, add them to a covered container or Ziploc bag and place them on the counter or cabinet. Eat within 3 days.

Notes

Tips for making this recipe:

  • This dish can be made in a food processor to make it easier to mash the avocado and mix the ingredients.
  • To store: Place in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap pushing it down directly on top of the guacamole to keep air out, should help with keeping it from browning too quickly.
