This Monte Cristo Breakfast Sandwich is the best of both worlds – sweet and savory. Cinnamon french toast, slices of ham, melted Swiss cheese, liberal amounts of strawberry preserves. Add an over-easy egg, and you have breakfast or brinner sandwich perfection!
This sandwich recipe came to me recently when I was making French toast for my family. I had this beautiful swirl bread that I used instead of plain white bread. All I had to do was dip the bread into some egg and milk, then cook.
Then I got to thinking, I wonder if this would be good with some ham and cheese on it? What about another level of sweetness and add strawberry preserves? Well, why not add an egg and make it a breakfast sandwich? WHY NOT?!?! There was no reason why not, so here you go.

For Mitten Movie Night I am pairing these Monte Cristo breakfast sandwiches with two options: one for breakfast, one for dinner.
What to drink with a Monte Cristo breakfast sandwich for breakfast for dinner sandwiches?
The drink for breakfast: Belle Vie Passion Fruit Seltzer.
To say I am obsessed with this stuff is an understatement. It’s SO GOOD! You can pick it up at Aldi’s. It’s light, fizzy and solved my pop cravings.
The beer: Sierra Nevada Wild Little Thing
Sour ales are having a moment right now and I am here for it.
What to binge-watch on Netflix while eating breakfast or dinner?
With a little extra time at home I’m able to catch up on television like never before. Sure, it’s usually kids show but one show on Netflix that I’m making time for is Dead to Me, and I plan on watching all of Season 2 in a marathon session.
How to make Monte Cristo Breakfast Sandwiches:
Start by making the ‘french toast’ base. I used cinnamon swirl bread, everything is built right into the bread so there is nothing to add to the egg base.
In a bowl add an egg and milk. Whip the liquid to combine.
Dip the bread into the egg mixture and coat both sides using a fork.
To a griddle pan add a 2 tsp olive oil and heat pan to medium/high heat.
Place the bread onto the pan and cook the first side 4 minutes until golden brown. Flip and cook another 2 minutes.
Remove the bread from the pan. On the same pan split the ham into two areas (one for each sandwich) and then top with cheese. Turn the heat back up on the skillet and let cook for 2 minutes or until cheese has melted.
Finally, cook the egg to how you like it. I like mine over easy, with the yolk still runny. Here is a handy guide How to Make a Perfect Over-Easy Eggs from The Kitchn.
Assemble the sandwich by spreading the strawberry preserves on the bottom piece, add the ham and cheese, then place the egg on top.
Spread some additional strawberry preserves on the top piece and place it on top. And here you are……

It looks amazing! I’ve eaten different strange combinations but never had strawberry preserves in a sandwich before. Strangely interesting, I must say.

It is the perfect complement to the ham! Sweet and salty.
