Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog

Do you love hot dogs? How about bacon? Now, how about garlic aioli? Let’s put those all together to make this Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog. Crack open a cold beer and dive into a different way to eat hot dogs.

Warmer weather just calls for some good hamburger and hot dog recipes! This specific recipe has been one that I’ve wanted to recreate at home for a while. While we were at a picnic through our local energy co-op there was a gourmet hot dog truck there and this was the one that I chose.

I picked it because: 1) It had bacon on it! 2) There was a sauce on it that sounded amazing, garlic aioli. My interest was peaked and I am glad that I chose this one, amazing.

Now that I’ve made this recipe at home, I will definently be adding it to my hot dog rotation for sure!

What beer pairs well with Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs with Garlic Aioli?

The beer: Woody Wheat Ale from Austin Brothers Beer Company.

A perfect wheat ale that doesn’t take away from the bacon and aioli.

How to make a Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog:

Wrapping bacon on hot dogs is so simple! Start by preheating the oven to 375 degrees.

Wrap a baking sheet with tin foil. This will make clean up so much easier!

Start by taking a piece of bacon at the top of a hot dog. Wrap the bacon going down around the hot dog. Place on the baking sheet and continue until they are all wrapped.

Bake in the oven for 12-18 minutes. The quickness of these getting done depending on your oven temperature.

Take the bacon and put under the broiler for 40-50 seconds.

Take them out and turn, put under the broiler again for another 40-50 seconds to crisp the other side.

Steam some buns and add the hot dogs to them. Now they are ready for topping!

How to make Garlic Aioli:

In a small bowl mix together the mayo, garlic cloves, 1 tsp lemon juice, salt and pepper.

To top off the hot dog I slathered garlic aioli on top, sprinkled Monterey Jack cheese, green onions, and jalapenos.

Memphis Hot Dogs #SundaySupper

Let’s agree that bacon is amazing.  And bacon wrapped anything is again, pretty amazing.  What about all beef hot dog wrapped in bacon then drizzled with a vinegary BBQ sauce?  CAN ANYTHING GET MORE AMAZING?  Try these Memphis Hot Dog and see.

For another Sunday Supper I actually made Michigan Hot Dogs and as I mentioned, they are not really from Michigan! I also realized there are so many different types of hot dogs! One that looks especially good are these Memphis hot dogs.  Not only is it wrapped in bacon it’s also a specialty of a place that I really enjoy visiting.

My husband and I visited the Memphis/Tunica area this March for a small trip before we moved into our new house.  While traveling my husband loves to visit area Costco’s.  I keep joking that he needs to get a punch card of locations so that he can mark them off his bucket list.  What was really exciting though was right next to the Costco was….a Brand New IKEA!  It was kismet considering that in just a few weeks were moving.  Of course, I also needed to pick up a few jars of lingonberries too!

Since we do not have a grill I made these Memphis hot dogs in the oven.  The bacon came out nice and crisp!

How to make Memphis Hot Dogs:

Take the hot dogs, I use Nathan’s because they are the best, and wrap a piece of bacon around each one.

Place on a greased pan then cook in a preheated 375-degree oven for 12 minutes.

Now put the hot dogs under the broiler of your oven for 1 minute, turn them then broil for one minute more.

Once they are done add them to the buns.

Top off these Memphis hot dogs with chopped green onions, cheddar cheese, and some Memphis Style BBQ Sauce.  I used my sauce recipe since it is on the vinegary side, which is what Memphis Style BBQ sauces are based on.

Memphis Hot Dogs

Instructions

This week officially marked two months in our new home!  So we are celebrating this Mitten Movie Night feeling like we are finally settled in.  I made one of my favorite categories of food: the ‘sandwich‘.  Topped with saucy goodness and peppers this Smoked Sausage Sandwich is a well-deserved reward for a job well done.

Greenbush is a great stop if you hit the beach or the casino in New Buffalo.

How do I find an amazing realtor team in Southwestern Michigan?

I would love to take the opportunity to give a little shout out of people that helped us along the way.  Since my blog is called ‘Bottom Left of the Mitten’ I thought it was a good platform to showcase who made buying a home in this area such a treat.

Realtor:  ‘Power of 2’ Team from Cressy & Everett in Dowagiac.  We actually looked at homes a few years ago and she walked us through any and everyone we wanted to look at.  We just didn’t find ‘the one’ at the time.  Called her up when we found this house to show it to us.  Three weeks and one day later not only did we have this house but we also sold ours and 4 acres of land.

Inspector:  Gary from Lake Michigan Inspections. I cannot recommend this gentleman and his father enough.  They walked us through everything, I mean everything, for our new house.  Living in town we were new to sewer and well. Same for a gas fireplace and even fixed a cap on the wood burning fireplace.

New Air Conditioner: Rohdy’s—Awesome job!  Right before our recent heatwave, they worked us in for a quote and then installed the unit.  Thanks to them we have stayed comfortable and cool.

Thank you again to everyone! Now on to the food.

How to make Smoked Sausage Sandwiches:

Chop up the peppers, onions and mince the garlic.  To a bowl add the balsamic vinegar, sugar and olive oil then mix to combine.

Sautee over medium/high heat for 7-10 minutes. I love when the peppers are ‘burnt’ a little so I got a little closer to the 10-minute mark.

Our new appliances were purchased in the recent store closing for HH Gregg.  This Frigidaire stove has a center griddle that I’ve been using non-stop.  No worries if you don’t have a griddle you can use a regular frying pan.

Butter buns and place them split side down.  Cut the sausage in 4 parts then split down the middle placing that split side down as well.

Heat the sausage through for around 3 minutes.

Flip both the bun and the sausage then cook around 3 minutes again.

Heating up the spaghetti sauce and assembling the sandwich is all that’s left to do.  I heated it up in the microwave for 1 minute. 

Place bun on a plate, add split smoked sausage, layer on the veggies then top with sauce.

When I saw the theme for this weeks #SundaySupper ‘All American Burgers & Dogs’ I knew I wanted to make one of my families favorites, chili dogs.  But how do I set myself apart from all other chili dogs out there?  Delving into foodie research I came across the most perfect dish……the Michigan hot dog.  A hot dog with beanless chili that is named after my beloved home state?  Yes!

But I’ll be honest….I didn’t even know what a Michigan hot dog was!  However, I found this fabulous article, Hot Dog of the Week: Decoding the “Michigan Dog” of New York State by Serious Eats.  It set me straight.  Real straight.  You see the title?  That’s right, the Michigan hot dog is a staple of NEW YORK!?!  However, it originated in Michigan, be it almost 100 years ago, so I am staking claim and feel safe to celebrate this chili dog as one of Michigan’s own.

Now you’ll say ‘Erin. You didn’t even know what a Michigan hot dog was. How are you going to even know if you did it right?’  For this, I trusted my husband’s taste buds since he has had them so he was my guide to whether they were close or not {PS. They were!}.

I decided to go with a slight vinegar based sauce. I LOVE vinegar (my favorite BBQ sauce is vinegar based too) and in doing my research it said that the sauce could be vinegar based. Or may contain cabbage. Or water from the cleanest Lake in Michigan. Or secret saliva from a wolverine. You get the fact that I’m joking but finding a truly original recipe was very hard so I improvised! I also used Nathan’s hot dogs as an homage to New York. Now let’s get started.

How to make Michigan Hot Dogs:

Prepare your hot dogs the usual way you would. I steam mine in the rice cooker.

Now time to make the chili.  Add the beef, onions and all the spices right on the top.

When the burger cooked it set the spices right into the meat. It’s my favorite way to cook beef.

Once the beef is cooked through add the tomato sauce, vinegar, and ketchup to the pan.  Do not drain the beef.  Stir to combine.

Put a medium simmer for around 5 minutes.  It does not take long to thicken up.

Now assemble your Michigan hot dog and add chili to the top along with mustard and the rest of your raw onion to the top.
